If you’ve been in my world a while you’ll know that Arvon (a creative writing organisation here in the UK) has a special place in my heart. I wrote about my experience of Arvon Magic here. I’m thrilled to announce that this year I’m teaching a short course at Arvon’s stunning, renovated venue, Lumb Bank, which just happens to be about ten minutes walk from my home!

Here’s the blurb…

Stories from history are all around us, but how do we mine the past for drama and turn facts into fiction? How do we recreate real people and events from history for modern audiences? And what are the crucial elements we need to create truly authentic and immersive historical fiction?

Acclaimed historical novelists and experienced tutors Stacey Halls and Katherine Clements will help you find answers to these questions, guiding you through a series of workshops exploring aspects of literary craft related to writing about the past.

Using local history and inspiration from the location itself, you’ll explore ways to find and develop story ideas, turn historical fact into compelling plot, and develop historical characters that readers will love.

This short course is perfect for anyone writing – or thinking about writing – historical fiction based on real people and events, whether that’s family history, famous figures, or little-known corners of the past. Suitable for writers at all stages of their journey, the course will provide you with one-to-one sessions with each tutor as well as workshops and discussion in a small group.
