Introducing The Inkwell Clinic – our next meet up!
A space for conversations, coaching and community ✍️
Once upon a time I was at a writers’ conference, taking part in a fiction workshop. The time for Q&A arrived. The very knowledgable tutor encouraged our curiosity. ‘Remember, there are no stupid questions!’ she said, brightly.
I had a question, but I thought it was stupid. Plucking up my courage, I put my hand in the air.
‘I’m writing a novel,’ I said. ‘And I need to move the action forward in time. How do I do that without saying, “three months later - blah blah blah”'?’
The tutor frowned, looked confused, then, with a patronising sneer, said. ‘Well, you just start three months later, obviously.’
Apparently, there were stupid questions, I thought, as I shrivelled up and immediately expired.
Her point was a fair one, but the delivery obscured it, and I didn’t hear the lesson at the time. The lesson I learned instead was that writers need a safe space to ask the questions they think are dumb. Those things we’re too scared to ask in public. To ask them without fear of judgement, and be met with honesty and support.
That what I want The Inkwell Clinic to be for you.
Join me on Wednesday 19th March, 5pm – 6pm UK time and we’ll tackle all our stupid questions together!
