The Inkwell Salon with Rebecca Mascull
Join us for an honest chat about making a living as a writer 📚
How do professional writers actually make a living?
What do you really earn from a splashy six-figure book deal?
Should you ever just quit the day job?
What questions do you have about making a living as a writer?
At The Inkwell Salon this month we’re talking about money. As a Brit, this is not something that comes naturally to me. We’re taught that talking about money is rude. God forbid you ask anyone where their money comes from, or how much they actually earn!
As a result, the financial side of writing and publishing can be shrouded in secrecy and vagary. This month we’re pulling back the veil and sharing the reality of earning a living as a professional author.
I’ll be joined by author Rebecca Mascull, a historical novelist, who also writes saga fiction as Mollie Walton and romcoms as Harper Ford. Rebecca is an award-winning teacher, has published fourteen novels (with more on the way) and was recently awarded an Arts Council grant to develop a graphic novel - talk about multi-talented!
She’ll be sharing her experience of writing in multiple genres, navigating the ups and downs of publishing, and staying resilient – and solvent – though personal challenges.
And I want you there to ask the questions! This is your chance to ask those tricky questions in a private community space. We’ll do our best to answer. There will be a replay and it’ll stay behind the paywall.
Thursday 19th June 2025, 6pm - 7pm UK time on Zoom.

The Inkwell Salon is a members only event.
A monthly membership is £6 (£5 if you choose an annual membership) so you can join us for the price of a fancy coffee.
I do hope you’ll come along live and meet Rebecca. Bring your questions. I’ll see you there!
P.S. I’ll be sharing an article about all the ways I earn money as a writer – look out for that over the weekend!
