Hello folks,

First up, a big welcome to all the new faces around here. I never dreamed when I pressed publish that last week’s post would hit home like it has. People have been sharing and commenting on Substack, and contacting me directly by email, and I’ve had some wonderful conversations as a result. People have shared their publishing stories, worries and fears with me and I’ve read every single one with increasing certainty and determination that The Inkwell will become a space where writers can share honestly and find support in community. I care deeply about author wellbeing, and believe that it is possible to achieve our creative dreams AND be joyful, purposeful, fulfilled and financially secure. (Hence the name, The Inkwell 😉)

If you’re new here, you are so welcome. I’m glad you found us! You can find out more about me and what I hope to build, or check out my website for extracts of my novels and details of my coaching and mentoring work.

With all that in mind, our July workshop will focus on a much requested topic…

Rejection & Resilience: the writing rollercoaster: Thursday 25 July 2024, 6pm-7pm UK time

Pop the date in your diary and join me at the Zoom link at the foot of this post/email.

Workshops and replays are for paid members of The Inkwell. A monthly membership is £6 (£5 if you choose an annual membership) so you can join us for the price of a fancy coffee. Feel free to join for a month and see if it’s your vibe – no hard feelings if it’s not for you!

How does rejection impact our writing lives?

When we think of rejection we tend think of ‘nos’ from publishing gatekeepers – rejection letters from agents, publishers, competitions, grant-awarding bodies, magazine editors, fellowships and so on. But rejection can come in more subtle forms, too. Any of these sound familiar?

  • Unsolicited or unhelpful feedback from readers

  • People you care about not reading your work

  • Disappointments that are painful even though you might expect them

  • People you share your life with dismissing your writing as a hobby that can easily be put aside in favour of other things

  • A bad review

  • Being ghosted or dropped by writer buddies

  • Publishing work to be greeted by tumbleweed

I’m sure you have your own examples. Many things can FEEL like rejection. It’s human to experience these feelings. Rather than deny them, I’ve found the best thing is to acknowledge them and focus instead on building resilience, so that when tough times do inevitably come around I’m much quicker to bounce back.

Join me for our July workshop and start building your writing resilience.

When?

Thursday 25 July 2024, 6pm-7pm UK time (BST)

Where?

On Zoom.

There’s no need to register. Zoom joining details are at the bottom of this post, viewable for paid subscribers only.

I’ll also send a reminder beforehand.

What we’ll cover

  • How rejection can impact our writing lives

  • How we build resilience

  • Practical actions we can take

  • Group discussion and mini-coaching exercises to help you find your personal way forward

I hope to create a safe and non-judgemental space for interaction and would LOVE to see some of you there live so we can connect, share experiences and solutions.

Who’s it for?

Anyone who writes and would like a supportive space to explore their writing practice in a deeper way.

Will there be a replay?

Yes. A replay will be available for all paid members.

If this sounds like something that would help you, make sure you’re a paid up member of The Inkwell and join me on 25 July.

I hope to see you there!
