I’ve found a blended life of marriage to a great husband, writing, and gradually reducing a part-time job, has worked for me, and I’m gratefully aware of that.
Oh, all SO true! One of the odd corners of having spent three years, back in the Pleistocene, publishing academic books and so reading the Bookseller is that I've always known I'd need other work. But the world at large, seeing only the tip of the iceberg - the books on the front tables, the megaseller on Graham Norton - has no idea of the ordinary writer's economics, any more than they do of actors' economics, or anyone else earning their living by the slippery, incalculable business of creativity.
Quite! I do remind students that when you see a well-known writer teaching in a university, or reviewing books in the papers, they're not just doing it for the love of the thing - they need the money.
Love this! As much as I’d love to imagine just a writing life without the figurative 9-5, I realise that I only have so much mental energy per day to devote to a manuscript anyway and value a regular income and stock options! 😅🥰 Thanks for always providing such amazing advice. 🤩
Well said.
Deeply resonating here too, Katherine. Thank you! ❤️

Absolutely! The number of people whose yardstick is J K Rowling. I mean, where is my country estate?? 😂
